First Insight announces XM platform applications supporting ESG and sustainability initiatives

First Insight, Inc., specialist in new Experience Management (XM) technology that is transforming how companies make better decisions leading to a sustainable future,  announced significant benefits realised by customers in achieving their environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals.

As reports show sustainability (a core ESG component) becoming increasingly important in consumers’ purchase decisions, companies are leveraging the First Insight platform to meet consumer expectations and strengthen their positioning as sustainable brands. By powering sustainable processes and better business decisions, First Insight enables efficient operations that enhance profitability while reducing environmental impact.

First Insight customers have recently reported significant business impact through leveraging the platform for sustainable, effective operations. A leading retail chain using First Insight to test their products before launch discovered that their customers found a particular design to be offensive. They were able to stop development before orders were placed, avoiding the substantial environmental impact and cost of reverse logistics and product disposal, in addition to the damage that would have resulted to their brand image and loyalty.

“Today’s consumers expect and even demand that the brands they invest in will act with the health of our planet in mind,” says Greg Petro, CEO of First Insight. “With the First Insight platform, companies gain the double benefit of delighting their customers and operating much more efficiently, increasing profits while reducing their environmental impact.”

First Insight customers testing early in the development process, particularly with 3D images, are reducing sample production costs by up to 70% and cutting time to market by 40% or more. A major brand used the First Insight platform to reduce the number styles produced by 61% while increasing adoption rate by 88% and units ordered by 39%. In addition, understanding whether customers are willing to pay more, and how much, for sustainable products is an ongoing challenge that the First Insight platform helps companies to address. A leading department store was able to capture a 10% price uplift for eco-friendly offerings based on First Insight test results.

“Across sectors and geographies, our customers use our platform to do more with less. They eliminate the lowest-performing products from their portfolio before launch, making their development process and their inventory investment substantially more efficient. One footwear brand reported growing revenues by 6% while reducing inventories by 40% using First Insight. That is truly doing more with less.”

NES specifies Vuzix M400 smart glasses for its NeoFace KAOATO facial recognition system

Rochester NY. 29 Dec 2021 – Vuzix Corporation, a supplier of Smart Glasses and Augmented Reality (AR) technology and products, announced that NEC Solution Innovators Ltd., a information technology and electronics company and system integrator in Japan, has specified the use of Vuzix M400 Smart Glasses for its NeoFace KAOATO Facial Recognition System.

NES claims that its facial recognition technology has been rated the best in the world by the globally authoritative U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. The NeoFace KAOATO facial recognition system, designed for use in commercial facilities and public facilities including department stores, supermarkets, schools and hospitals, utilises the M400’s 4K HD camera to perform facial recognition in real time. This enables recognition in certain locations where fixed cameras cannot be installed and allows detection of visitors’ entries more effectively.

“We are pleased to be specified as the smart glasses solution within such a comprehensive identification system by a recognised leader in the space,” says Paul Travers, president and CEO of Vuzix. “Vuzix M400 Smart Glasses provides studio quality picture and video capture with auto-focus and image stabilisation, making it an ideal device for facial recognition applications. We look forward to working with NES and supporting the successful deployment of its NeoFace KAOATO Facial Recognition System.”

Voyant Photonics raises $15.4M in series A funding to deliver 3D sensing

Long Island City, N.Y. 30 Dec 2021 – Voyant Photonics announced that it raised $15.4M (€13.60M) in Series A led by UP.Partners with participation of earlier investors LDV Capital and Contour Ventures.

Voyant’s LiDAR system, containing thousands of optical components fabricated on a single semiconductor chip, enables its customers to integrate an effective and exponentially more scalable LiDAR system. LiDAR is a key technology to enable 3D vision across many industries including transportation, robotics, industrial automation, and consumer electronics. Voyant developer kits are now available for select customers on its waiting list.

Previously, LiDAR systems were fabricated using discrete mechanical and optical components, resulting in large and expensive solutions. Voyant Photonics’ solution radically reduces the size and manufacturing complexity of LiDAR. Voyant’s LiDAR chips pave the way for large-scale adoption of 3D sensing in the same way that CMOS image sensors enabled the accelerated growth of digital photography.

Voyant leverages commercially available and scalable semiconductor fabrication processes that combine thousands of optical and electrical components onto a single chip. This enables Voyant to mass-produce a LiDAR system similar to how computer chips are made. This groundbreaking technology will make Voyant LiDAR a ubiquitous technology for machine perception.

Co-founders Chris Phare and Steven Miller had been working on LiDAR chips for years at Columbia University’s Lipson Nanophotonics Group when they decided to commercialise their technology and launched Voyant Photonics.

Chris Phare

Miller and Phare’s unique insight was to apply the silicon photonics technology used for optical data communications, the same technology that has made high-performance data centre fiber optics affordable. “When you fabricate a LiDAR system on a chip, the fabrication cost stays the same regardless of how many components you use,” says Phare. “We will soon be selling LiDAR systems for a few hundred dollars and longer-term will sell them for less than a hundred dollars at scale.”

Voyant Photonics’ devices demonstrate a complete LiDAR system in a field-deployable package, using Voyant’s patented techniques for on-chip digital beam steering, optical signal processing, and laser control.

“When we started on our mission to make LiDAR a ubiquitous technology for machine perception, a lot of people said silicon photonics was not ready to leave the lab,” says Miller. “Our successful first milestones prove that we can build a complete LiDAR solution that meets industrial needs, using silicon photonics, and deploy it anywhere.”

“Now that we can make LiDAR systems on semiconductor chips, we can make them better and less expensive with every development cycle, similar to Moore’s Law for computer chips,” adds Phare. “While the excellent performance of our first LiDAR chips surprised even us, this is just the beginning. Just like with computer chips and camera sensors, every design iteration will get better.”

“Ubiquitous 3D vision is critical to enabling the transformation of the world of transportation and beyond. We are honoured to partner with the Voyant team who is the leading innovator in the field. Their solution will leapfrog all competitors and deliver a scalable solution to enable 3D vision,” says Ben Marcus, managing partner of UP.Partners.

“I am so excited with the progress we have made. Our team has accomplished so much, and now we are delivering the first LiDAR systems of their type powered by an integrated photonic chip,” says Peter Stern. “Our diverse customers in robotics, AGVs, mobility, industrial automation, and security all have one thing in common they are building solutions that need to understand the world around them… That is what our LiDAR systems provide.” Peter is a serial entrepreneur who has a background in creating military-grade LiDAR. He started as an advisor to Voyant and recently became CEO.
